oThe NONPF Independent Practice Competency “NP 2.4 Diagnose actual
or potential health problems and needs” was achieved through the i-
Human assignments and in the practicum setting. The i-Human
assignments in this course were truly challenging and compelled me to
obtain a deeper understanding of the profound impact an accurate
diagnosis has on patient outcomes. An accurate diagnosis allows the
clinician to appropriately tailor the patient’s care and eliminates
unnecessary testing and treatment and prevents potential sentinel
events.
oIn the practicum setting, my preceptor truly aided me in stepping out
of the bedside RN role into the NP role by challenging me to identify
several must-not-miss diagnoses and 3 to 4 regular diagnoses for each
patient that I saw. This required me to really consider pathophysiology,
presenting signs and symptoms, and then correlating them to the
diagnoses I had identified. It was encouraging to be explain exactly
why I had decided on a specific diagnosis and the preceptor agreed
